This is one of a series of random rules revision pages to help you keep your rules knowledge up-to-date. Answer the question then hit the drop down arrow to see if you were correct.
All references to rule book modules and sections correct as at Issue 17, March 2026.
There may be the occasional reference to SWR's driving policy too - if you don't work for SWR then you can ignore those or substitute your own company's instructions!
Report to the signaller immediately, stopping the train if necessary.
Module SP (5.1 and 5.3)
the signaller
the pilot or handsignaller acting on the signaller’s instructions
the shunter acting on the signaller’s instructions when making a shunting movement
another competent person where authorised in the rules.
Module S5 (1.2)
You must proceed at caution, even if the line appears to be clear.
Beware, the next signal may be a danger!
Module S5 (4.2)
You must make sure that any points or crossings are in the correct position for your train. You should confirm this with the signaller before making a movement.
You must not pass over these points or crossings at more than 15 mph.
Module S5 (4.1)
When you can see that the next stop signal ahead is displaying a proceed aspect, your train can travel at any speed appropriate to the aspect of that signal, unless the signaller has told you that you need to travel at a reduced speed over the portion of line up to the signal.
Module S5 (4.4)
You must continue to proceed at caution and expect that the next stop signal could be at danger.
Module S5 (4.2)
Extended Block Working enables a driver to pass two or more main main aspect stop signals at danger where signalling equipment on a TCB line other than a single line fails or is disconnected.
Module S5 (5.1)
Extended Block Working must apply between:
an entrance signal kept at danger on the approach to the affected area, and
an exit signal, that can be replaced to danger from the signal box, at a suitable location easily identifiable by a driver, beyond the affected area.
When possible, this suitable location should be a place such as a station, level crossing, tunnel or junction.
An ‘end of degraded working’ sign must be provided at the exit signal, but extended block working can introduced before this sign is provided if the exit signal is before, at, or immediately beyond a station, level crossing, tunnel, or junction.
Module S5 (5.2)
Stop at the entry signal
Signaller advises that Extended Block Working is in place and the location to which you must proceed
Signally advises whether 'end of degraded working' sign has been provided
You complete Extended Block Working Ticket (NR3190)
You are given authority to pass entry signal at danger
Tell guard, operate TPWS temporary isolation
Max speed 50mph (50mph over points unless instructed)
Disregard intermediate signals, stop at exit signal.
Module S5 (5.2)
Maximum speed 50mph (maximum 50mph over points unless instructed)
Module S5 (4.1, 4.2 and 5.6)
If you are the first train to enter an Extended Block Working section you must:
approach all points and crossings at caution
check that they are in the correct position
not pass over any of these points or crossings at more than 15 mph.
Module S5 (5.6)
When your train arrives at the exit signal, you must:
stop
immediately reinstate TPWS
tell the signaller that your train has arrived at the exit signal
cancel the Extended Block Working Ticket by writing the word ‘CANCELLED’ across it
obey the signaller’s instructions for resuming normal working.
Module S5 (5.7)
Before you start a train from a siding, depot or yard, you must make sure it is safe to do so, and get permission from the person in charge.
Module TW1 (36)
Where the siding is operated by a shunter:
You must work to the shunter’s instructions.
You must only make a movement if the shunter has authorised the movement, even when a signal has been cleared.
Module SS2 (5.1)
5mph
Module SS2 (5.1)
Module TW1 41.1 states that train radio may be used when a train is moving if you are responding to a ‘contact signaller’ message.
However, you must decide whether it is necessary and whether it can be done safely, taking into consideration:
cautionary signal aspects
locations where it is necessary to reduce speed or you are running over a speed restriction
whether you have reduced the speed of your train sufficiently before making the call to keep full control of the train throughout the call.
The SWR professional driving policy states that "you must avoid interacting with the in-cab equipment" in the above circumstances, including approaching stations, "unless absolutely necessary."
Module TW1 (41.1)
If a crossing is under local control a green handsignal provides authority to pass over the crossing.
Module TW8 (2.4)
Module SS1 states tthat if you receive the ‘ready-to-start’ signal and the platform starting signal is at danger you must not move your train unless the signaller gives you permission to do so.
The SWR professional driving policy states that ‘Ready to Start’ given against a signal at danger must be reported to the controlling Signaller immediately and followed up with a written report.
Module SS1 (3.4)
