This is one of a series of random rules revision pages to help you keep your rules knowledge up-to-date. Answer the question then hit the drop down arrow to see if you were correct.
All references to rule book modules and sections correct as at Issue 17, March 2026.
There may be the occasional reference to SWR's driving policy too - if you don't work for SWR then you can ignore those or substitute your own company's instructions!
When one line of a a double line becomes blocked, SLW by pilot allows trains to travel over the other line in either direction.
Module P1 (1)
Red armband with PILOT written in white on the left arm.
Module P1 (2.1)
The pilot must ride with the driver if:
there is no end of degraded working sign at the end of the SLW section (3.5.3)
during poor visibility where no main aspect or stop signal is provided (3.5.4).
when working to and from a point of obstruction (10.3).
Module P1 (3.5, 10.3)
Identify the pilot, who will wear the PILOT armband
Clearly understand all instructions the pilot has given you
Have authority to enter the single line
Receive the SLW ticket RT3193
Module P1 (9.1)
Over which line SLW applies, and between which crossovers.
The location of any intermediate handsignaller.
If a main aspect or stop signal will be used to control movements back to the proper line.
The location of the end of degraded working sign placed where the train must stop before being authorised to proceed back to the proper line.
Level crossing arrangements.
Points and crossings arrangements, including location of any unworked points.
Temporary or emergency speed restrictions.
Module P1 (6.2)
Obey signals.
Normal speed, unless restrictions in place.
Normal speed over points unless you are the first train over the SLW section, or you have passed a signal at danger.
Module P1 (9.3 and 9.5)
Tell the guard
Obey handsignals and position lights
Maximum 50mph (or permitted speed if lower)
Follow instructions regarding points and crossings - 15 or 50mph
Disregard signals on other line
Follow pilot's instructions re crossings
Stop the train at the end of platforms if no stop car marks provided
Return to proper line via main aspect signal, signaller's authority (where there is an end of degraded working sign) or pilot's instruction
Only pass signals at danger when authorised by signaller, pilot or handsignaller
Normal use of warning horn (wrong direction horn code removed December 2024).
Module P1 (9.4 and 9.5) and TW1 (33.1)
When accompanied by the pilot, on reaching the end of the single line cancel your ticket by writing ‘CANCELLED’ across it and give the ticket to the pilot.
When not accompanied by the pilot you do not need to stop at the end of the single line to give up the ticket unless specially instructed to do so. However, you must as soon as possible, cancel the ticket by writing ‘CANCELLED’ across it, and hand it in before the end of duty.
Module P1 (9.6)
You must immediately contact the signaller (unless approaching buffer stops).
When a TPWS failure or irregularity is reported, you must both complete form RT3185.
You do not need to immediately complete form RT3185 if the signaller can tell you the fault or irregularity is a right-side failure and can confirm the circumstances of the failure.
You must then complete RT3185 at the first convenient opportunity.
Module TW1 (1) and S7 (7.8)
You must immediately tell the signaller, stopping the train specially if necessary, if:
you receive an AWS clear indication when a warning indication should have been received (fault code 5)
you do not receive any AWS indication when a warning indication should have been received (fault code 7).
Other AWS faults where the failure is to give a clear indication must be reported to the signaller at the first convenient opportunity.
Module S7 (7.8)
When proceeding towards another train which is at a stand, you must:
approach at caution
stop your train at least 2 metres short of the train in front.
Note that SWR's Professional Driving Policy requires a speed of no more than 10mph at the platform ramp when entering an occupied platform.
Module TW1 (20.3) and SWR Professional Driving Policy
the exact location of the failed train.
whether the signaller is going to put you into contact with the driver of the failed train by GSM-R radio
the train type
the train formation (and whether traction motors need to be isolated due to the current limit index)
the nature of the fault
where the failed train must be taken to
Module M2 (various)
obtain permission to pass any signal at danger
tell the guard
confirm the location of the driver if not on the train
Module M2 (various)
During the movement towards the failed train, you must proceed at caution and travel at a speed not exceeding 25 mph.
Module M2 (various)
If you have stopped your train incorrectly at a station so that the whole of the train is not at the platform:
You must tell the guard immediately using the bell or buzzer communication (2-2) a supplementary PA announcement is recommended in SWR's Professional Driving Policy.
If the doors have been released by mistake, you must arrange for the guard to check that no one has fallen from the train before moving the train.
If someone has fallen from the train, or you cannot be certain whether anyone has fallen from the train, you must tell the signaller.
You must get the signaller’s permission before moving the train if it involves:
• a wrong-direction movement
• a movement towards a signal at danger
• any movement on a permissive platform line.*
*SWR's Professional Driving Policy requires you to contact the signaller before moving your train in all stop short incidents, to report all stop short incidents to the controlling Signaller immediately and follow up with a written report.
