This is one of a series of random rules revision pages to help you keep your rules knowledge up-to-date. Answer the question then hit the drop down arrow to see if you were correct.
All references to rule book modules and sections correct as at Issue 17, March 2026.
There may be the occasional reference to SWR's driving policy too - if you don't work for SWR then you can ignore those or substitute your own company's instructions!
Before entering the single-line section, you must make sure:
you can properly identify the pilot (PILOT armband)
you clearly understand all the instructions the pilot has given to you
you have the personal authority of the pilot to enter the single-line section, including any authority to pass signlas at danger
the pilot has given you a Driver’s Ticket for Working Single and Bi-directional Lines by Pilot (RT3156) except where not required
temporarily isolate TPWS if required
advise the guard the working of single line by pilot is in place
Module P2 (3.3)
Only if you have to pass more than one signal at danger in the single line section.
Before leaving the section you must re-instate the TPWS.
Module S5 (3.4)
The pilot is not required to ride with the driver if they are to travel on a following train.
If working to and from the point of obstruction the pilot must always travel with the driver over the single-line section.
Module P2 (3.5)
Linespeed (unless otherwise instructed in the RT3156 form) and 15 mph over points.
Module P2 (3.6) and S5 (4.1)
Cancel your driver’s ticket by writing ‘CANCELLED’ across it and then hand it to the pilot.
Re-instate the TPWS if this has been temporarily isolated.
If the pilot is not with you, you do not have to stop unless the pilot has instructed you to do so.
If you have been instructed to stop, you must tell the signaller that your train has arrived.
Module P2 (3.7)
Only where:
You have stopped your train at the signal and the handsignaller has given you the necessary instructions.
Or:
The signaller or pilot has already told you about the circumstances and has instructed you to obey the handsignal shown at the signal. In this case you do not need to stop your train if a yellow handsignal is shown at the signal.
Module S5 (3.2)
You should ignore any ground position signals in the route, unless the signaller has told you that the train is only authorised to proceed up to a specified position-light.
In that case you must stop at that signal whatever aspect is displayed.
Module S5 (4.6)
Approach the crossing at caution and check it's safe before passing over.
Module S5 (4.3)
You must approach the crossing at caution and pass over it only if a green handsignal is shown at the crossing when you have been told:
an AHBC is under local control
to make a wrong-direction movement over a CCTV crossing that is under local control
to make a movement in either direction over a CCTV crossing that is under local control on a line under possession.
If a level crossing is under local control you should contact the signaller if no handsignal is displayed.
Module TW8 (2.4)
You must stop the train immediately.
Contact the guard to establish the reason.
Contact the signaller to report and obtain authority to restart.
If part of the train is in a station, reach a clear understanding with the guard regarding dispatch.
Module TW1 (9 and 43)
You must:
bring your train to a stand immediately
listen to the message.
Note: If the driver presses the ST button the display will stop flashing during a REC (RS523 GSM-R Handbook)
Module TW1 (41.6)
During the REC, the signaller will identify all trains that must remain at a stand.
The signaller will instruct those to remain at a stand and get confirmation that the message has been received and understood.
You must not consider the REC to be ended until the signaller has stated 'End of railway emergency group call'.
Module TW1 (41.6)
You must not consider the REC to be ended until the signaller has stated 'End of railway emergency group call'.
After the REC has ended, you may restart your train as long as:
you are sure your train is not affected by the emergency
the signaller has not instructed you to remain at a stand.
You must proceed at caution as far as the next stop signal.
In all other situations you must get authority from the signaller before you restart your train.
Module TW1 (41.6)
You must only use the emergency call facility when it is necessary for trains in the area to be stopped immediately, or to call the emergency services, because of an accident, obstruction or other emergency.
Module TW1 (41.6)
You must give them all necessary instructions and information about the safe operation of the train.
This must include:
any operational requirements affecting the safe working of the train
any defects with the train which they need to know about
any instructions given by the signaller.
Module TW1 (44)
If 'Registration failed' is displayed after an attempt has been made to register the train radio:
check the registration code was entered correctly
attempt to register the train radio a second time.
If the second attempt also fails contact the signaller.
After contacting the signaller, one further attempt can be made.
Where GSM-R GB is displayed on the train radio, the train can still proceed unregistered. When GSM-R GB is not displayed, the instructions for a defective train radio are used.
RS523 GSM-R Handbook (4.5)
The ‘train in distress’ warning is a continuous series of long blasts of the horn.
You should also switch on the hazard warning lights and/or display a red light.
You should use the ‘train in distress’ warning if you cannot control the speed of your train or you need to alert anyone about some other emergency.
Module TW1 (40)
When on duty, you must have with you:
a handlamp
high-visibility clothing
a means of telling the accurate time
up-to-date notices for all lines over which you are required to work
any other equipment as shown in your train operating company instructions.
You must also have with you a supply of:
RT3185 Reporting a Signal/AWS/TPWS failure or irregularity
NR3190 Extended Block Working Tickets
You must have a means of completing these forms.
Module TW1 (21)
You must reach a clear understanding with the signaller as to which portion of line is to be examined.
The signaller will tell you if the examination of the line is because of a suspected track defect
You must report the state of the affected line from an agreed location beyond the affected portion.
Module TW1 (12)
You would inspect the line at caution, carrying out any other instructions.
If the line to be inspected is within a tunnel, you must not exceed 10 mph through the tunnel.
If the examination of the line is due to a suspected track defect, you must not exceed 20 mph.
When inspecting the line following a overbridge strike the maximum speed is 5 mph.
When inspecting the line following a underbridge strike you must proceed at no greater speed than the signaller tells you.
Module TW1 (12.1 and 5.3)
During darkness
In poor visibility
If the affected portion of line is within a tunnel
Module TW1 (12.3)
